Beyond the Trail — Eco Trail Design & Biodiversity Mapping
An eco-sensitive trail system for the New Forest, built on GIS ecological analysis. I classified habitats across the whole park, derived slope from a DEM, mapped species records into a biodiversity index, and ran 50 m buffer analysis along three eco-trails — Emery Down Circular, Rhinefield and Burley Village.
The analysis then became something people can actually use on the trail: an interactive Leaflet web app with habitat layers, species observations and a biodiversity index per route.
Tools & methods: ArcGIS Pro, QGIS, Leaflet, British National Grid (EPSG:27700), habitat classification (PHI/Natural England), slope analysis (USGS DEM), species data (NBN Atlas/iNaturalist), 50 m trail buffer analysis.
